Laser cut steel: An Industry Overview

Laser cutting uses a high-focus, high-energy beam of infra-red light to melt or vaporize a narrow area on a steel sheet to cut it through without distorting or destroying the surrounding area. Such cutting also uses gases like carbon dioxide, oxygen or inert gases, and also compressed air as assist gases to aid vaporization or blow away fragments and keep the laser lens cool and clean. Methods like “reactive cutting” using less laser power, are used to cut dense carbon steel plates, and here a gas like oxygen is used and this is similar to blow-torch cutting. Laser cutting is one of the quickest and most accurate ways of cutting steel, thus making it highly economical, with minimal wastage and use of resources.

Large laser cutting companies employ state-of-the-art computerized, automated machines to cut steel. Generally, they keep standard cut sizes and grades of steel in different gauges and thicknesses in stock, but many of them do not want to hold large inventories due to space and security constraints, so they work on a just-in-time basis, especially when clients want customized cuts.

The types of materials and steel that can be cut in most standard laser cutting companies are mild steel, galvanized steel, carbon or stainless steel. One advantage that laser cutting has over traditional cutting methods is that the laser beam is not subject to wear and tear like other cutting instruments. Finer tooling effects are also possible directly a by laser cutting machine, which may not be possible with conventional methods, as they require further finishing after cutting. With increased automation and computerization, laser cut steel is in great demand in several, diverse industrial applications. Batch cutting reduces power costs and also ensures consistency.

Though laser cutting for steel is now becoming very common in the industry, it's not easy to find suppliers who can deliver a quality product at a competitive price. Getting a quality product depends on whether the sheet metal steel is itself of good quality. Rust, corrosion or other contamination should not be present. The thickness should be concurrent with what the cutting machines can work with. Customers should provide the correct specifications and the quality check before they take delivery and should conform with these. Freight and delivery rates should be discussed before awarding the contract, otherwise you may end up wasting valuable time waiting for your laser cut steel consignments.
