Laser Cut Decorative Screens : Adding Beauty to your Interiors

A perfectly placed screen in a room can, apart from its practical use as a room divider or separator, be a unique work of art in itself. As a decorative element in the space, it can also provide a focus point for fabric design, color or furniture placement and design. A sectional, foldable screen with patterned fretwork or open lattice patterns in a variety of materials, ranging from metal to wood, or a combination of materials, can also be the perfect solution to providing air and light between two parts of a room. Screens can also provide some privacy and separation, depending on the screen's density and thickness and the intricacy of its designs and motifs.

Laser cutting for decorative screens offers the perfect blend of design and technology. Graphics design professionals, artists, interior decorators and architects can work together to create a distinctive design which can then be executed by laser cutting on the specified material. The advantage of laser cutting is that it gives sharp, clean finish, with very little wastage of materials. Since the laser cutting machines are usually automated or computerized, errors and miscalculations can be eliminated if the specifications are correctly input.

Generally, a choice of materials is available for fabricating a decorative screen:

Corten: This is the steel chosen by architects for decorative screens as it does not corrode easily and it ages beautifully given its high copper content. However it is better suited for indoor areas as it can rust if left in the rain.

Mild Steel: is the most cost-effective material and can be finished with powder-coating. Screens in lobbies, restaurants and homes can be made of this material, though it is not very durable and not suitable for exteriors unless re-coating and rust-proofing are regularly carried out. Stainless steel is another option, which can be polished, painted or engraved/embossed etc. and is also quite affordable.

Aluminum: For a light-weight, easily movable decorative piece, this is the best metal option. However, it's ultimately the finishing, painting, anodizing or coating that make aluminum look classy. Otherwise it can look tacky and cheap. It can also dull with exposure to sun and rain if left outdoors.

MDF, Plywood, Hardwood: Used traditionally in China, the Far East, Morocco, Algeria, etc, wood provides an organic, natural feel to the room and can also be exquisitely cut or carved in intricate designs. Generally installed indoors, wooden screens can also be polished, oiled or treated to be kept outside. Painting, polishing or varnishing are essential to protect the wood and give it shine and beauty. Laser cutting offers great tooling options for wood and fine finishes because the laser can be perfectly guided to provide burn-free, smooth-edged finishing.

Depending on your design ideas, budget, placement options, requirements and choice of material, a laser cut decorative screen can provide the perfect design statement for your interiors or exteriors.
